The National Parks-America's Best Idea

2009 September 30

I’ve been watching the PBS Ken Burns’ doc, The National Parks.

If you care a all about nature, the outdoors and the amazing country that we live in, you should at least check it out. It’s pretty damn good.

It reminded me of the very first time I ever visited a national park. When I was ten, my parents took us to Glacier National Park in Montana. Once we gained our first view of the jagged peaks, I started to cry. Big, rolling tears welled up in my eyes and rolled down my cheeks.

At first, my mother thought that something was wrong, but then she saw the smile on my face. The sheer sight of something so stunning, so real, so raw, made me so happy that I couldn’t contain myself.

I will never forget that moment, as long as I live. And The National Parks reminds me of that feeling every five seconds.
